Anton Mauve

Paintings of Anton Mauve

Anton Mauve (1838–1888) was a leading Dutch realist painter and a key figure of the Hague School. He is best known for his atmospheric landscapes, depictions of rural outdoor life, and subtle rendering of natural light.

Artistic Style: Mauve specialized in quiet, open-air scenes featuring livestock, working horses, and shepherds. His palette favored soft greens, silvery grays, and muted earth tones, capturing the damp, hazy atmosphere of the Dutch countryside.

The Laren School: Later in his career, he moved to Laren in the Het Gooi region. His work attracted a circle of painters, establishing the area as an important artist colony.

Mentorship of Vincent van Gogh: Mauve married Van Gogh's cousin, Ariëtte Carbentus, and served as an early mentor to Vincent in The Hague during 1881–1882. He introduced Van Gogh to oil painting and watercolor techniques.

Legacy: His paintings were immensely popular during his lifetime, particularly in the United Kingdom and North America. Today, his works are featured in major collections worldwide, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
