Helen Allingham (1848–1926) was a prominent Victorian painter and illustrator, celebrated for her charming watercolors of the English countryside.

She studied at the Royal Female School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London, initially making a name for herself as a successful commercial illustrator for newspapers and books. In 1890, she achieved a major milestone by becoming the first woman granted full membership in the Royal Watercolour Society.

Allingham is best known for her detailed, affectionate depictions of picturesque thatched cottages, lush gardens, and quiet rural life, particularly around Surrey and Sussex. Her work captures a nostalgic, idyllic vision of traditional rural England during a period of rapid industrialization. Beyond their artistic beauty, her precise compositions serve as an invaluable historical record of 19th-century vernacular architecture and country landscapes.
