Giovanni Fattori

Paintings of Giovanni Fattori

Giovanni Fattori (1825–1905) was a leading Italian painter and printmaker, celebrated as a principal figure of the Macchiaioli movement—Italy’s precursor to Impressionism. Rejecting academic conventions, Fattori advocated painting directly from nature to capture light, shade, and natural color contrast using distinct patches of tone (macchie).

His artwork largely focuses on two themes: realistic depictions of military life and tranquil scenes of Tuscan rural landscapes. Unlike romanticized war paintings, Fattori’s military scenes realistically portrayed the quiet, gritty routine of soldiers. Additionally, his etchings demonstrate remarkable line control, establishing him as a master printmaker. Today, Fattori is honored as a vital innovator who modernized 19th-century Italian art, leaving a lasting influence on naturalism and realism.
