Paintings of Randolph Caldecott (1846–1886)

Was an influential English illustrator and artist, best known for his illustrations in children's books. Born in Chester, England, he initially worked as a bank clerk before pursuing a career in art. His lively drawings, often humorous and full of movement, brought stories and nursery rhymes vividly to life.

Caldecott developed a distinctive style, combining expressive characters, detailed backgrounds and a wonderful sense of humour. His illustrations for the Christmas books published by Edmund Evans in the 1870s and 1880s became particularly famous. Together with Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway, he helped establish a golden age of British children's book illustration.

His influence was so significant that the American Library Association established the prestigious Randolph Caldecott Medal in 1938, awarded annually for outstanding children's picture books.
