Willem Roelofs

Paintings of Willem Roelofs

Willem Roelofs (1822–1897) was a prominent Dutch landscape painter, watercolorist, and printmaker who played a pivotal role in bridging traditional Dutch landscape art with modern Realism. Born in Amsterdam, he trained in Utrecht and The Hague, laying the groundwork for a career that profoundly influenced 19th-century European landscape painting.

Barbizon Influence: In 1847, Roelofs moved to Brussels, where he lived for nearly forty years. From there, he frequently visited France, becoming deeply inspired by the Barbizon School. He adopted their emphasis on en plein air (open-air) painting, capturing natural light and atmosphere directly from observation.

Pioneer of the Hague School: Combining French naturalism with the rich 17th-century Dutch tradition of Ruysdael and Hobbema, Roelofs became one of the major forebears of the Hague School.

Mentor to Masters: Beyond his own artistic production, Roelofs was an influential teacher. He mentored key figures of modern art, most notably Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Paul Gabriël.

Scientific Curiosity: Outside of art, Roelofs was an accomplished entomologist who specialized in beetles, published scientific papers, and co-founded the Royal Belgian Entomological Society.
